I Am Mario :: Resourceful Community
Welcome to I Am Mario :: Resourceful Community -- Global SEL in action. Let's step into a unique human's mind, heart, perspectives, and story. Let's explore self, others, and our world in a new, beautiful way. A new wordless video paired with written stories and lesson plans to help us build our social emotional skills, empathy, global understanding, curiosity, critical thinking, and compassion together.
Culturally inclusive Social Emotional Learning (SEL) integrated directly with math, literacy, and more. Get started by clicking the STORY or LESSON PLAN tabs -- or start with the Wordless Video above. Social Emotional Learning that makes math and literacy inspiring.
As we engage, let's remember that this Learning Journey story is an introduction to who this human is. It would take years (even a lifetime of heartstorming!) to wholly understand this person, just like it takes us such a long time to begin to understand ourselves.
As we enter the wordless video, let's remember to suspend judgment and to focus on curiosity and wonder. To recognize bias and assumptions, and to explore how we might move beyond these assumptions together in a meaningful way. (Here is a powerful lesson plan for this, as another option for a lesson plan!)
As we enter the written stories, let's remember that this person in the story is not representative of a whole culture or way of life -- learning means moving beyond generalizations and simple single stories. We've got to remember that this person is a unique individual with unique experiences, just like everyone in our own lives and classrooms. We've got to live with ubuntu.
Judgment and bias are both quick to get and hard to get rid of. And both are rather boring!
But learning? Learning is magical. Learning is forever.

I Am Mario :: Resourceful Community
Buenos días! Good morning! My name is Mario Juárez. I live in Guatemala, which is a small Spanish-speaking country in Central America. Did you find it on the map? I’m excited to tell you about my family. I have a wife, a teenage son and two younger daughters. We live in rural town called San Andrés Itzapa (“eetz-ah-pah”). The town sits in a valley surrounded by mountains and covered in forests. There are all types of plants and trees in my area, such as aloe and eucalyptus and pine trees. About 32,000 people live here, and our community is very tight-knit and friendly. We call ourselves Itzapecos (“eetz-sah-peck-ohs”).
Do you know which plants are native to your area? Even if you live in a big city, I bet you can find some native plants! A lot of ours are even good to make medicine; for example, aloe can be used to help sunburns and dry skin! How about you research plants from your area and then tell me about them?
